From a young age you were thrown into education. This provided the core belief systems on which you learn today. Learning is a continual process that most certainly started before going into education. My question is, is that the point where the majority stop pursuing learning outside of the formal schooling setting?

You could argue that the choice to go onto higher education is choosing to pursue learning. My point, though, is that there is so much added value outside of what we generally consider education. Learning is a process that continues long after graduation. The difference is between those who go after it and those who let it happen to them. I would consider myself in pursuit of learning.

It is learning outside of formal education that have helped me build the skills I need to navigate the world. Education has provided the basis to be able to do some of these things, as well as pick up some qualifications and knowledge along the way. At the time I didn’t necessarily consider these as learning experiences but I have gained a lot from them:

  • Solo travel around the world
  • Reading outside of my knowledge areas
  • Playing in sports teams
  • Running sports clubs
  • Running in student elections
  • Presenting at conferences.
