Why do you get out of bed in the morning?

Why do you get out of bed in the morning? You might answer with ‘because the alarm went off’ or because you ‘needed to get ready for work’. But this is not what I am really asking. I am more after something deeper, the meaning behind why you do what you do. Your purpose. Articulating this will likely be difficult if you haven’t thought about it before, but give it a go.

Let’s take it one further. Think about your job — why did you choose to go into this particular career? Again, ‘to earn money’ isn’t the answer I am after. Getting paid every month is the result, it is not why you chose to do it. Figuring out answers to these two questions are not straight forward, but are important in getting to really know yourself.

Finding purpose

What I have tried to get you to articulate in your responses are what Simon Sinek calls your ‘why’. That is, your mission, or your purpose. In both his TED talk ‘how great leaders inspire action’ and his book ‘Start with why’ he outlines that we connect with people because of our ‘why’.

Sinek states, ‘people don’t buy what you do they buy why you do it’ and this is totally true. You are more likely to buy something from a company if you believe in their values; or more likely to do business with someone because you believe in a goal they are trying to…
